Christyn & Lloyd

On the afternoon of their wedding day, Christyn and Lloyd stood on the cliffs at Sandstone Point in Oregon with the Pacific Ocean stretching behind them. Surrounded by loved ones, they said ‘I do’ listening to the sounds of the waves crashing against the cliffs below.

When they first started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to get married in the Pacific Northwest. Somewhere on the West Coast with dramatic landscapes. And they wanted their loved ones there to experience it with them.

They’d originally planned for the Oregon Coast, then pivoted to North Carolina to make travel easier for their East Coast families. But when a hurricane changed their plans, they came right back to the rugged cliffs they’d dreamed about from the beginning. And everyone they’d wanted to be there made it happen!

The Couple and Their Decision to Plan a Sandstone Point Oregon Wedding

As photographers who call the PNW home, one of our favorite micro wedding venues on the Oregon Coast is Crook Point. Not only does this venue have a variety of lodging and ceremony options, but they also have incredible views of the coast. These ceremony spots are completely private locations that you can only access by booking the venue. This means you don’t have to worry about anyone else nearby during your ceremony or portraits.

Christyn and Lloyd chose to stay at The Lookout, with their families staying at Myrview Estates next door. Their ceremony took place at Sandstone Point, a private ceremony site that’s part of the Crook Point property.

Sandstone Point gives you the whole beauty of what the Oregon Coast is known for: rugged coastline on dramatic cliffs. You can’t get these views anywhere else on the West Coast! And because it’s private property, you have the entire place to yourself.

What I love most about Sandstone Point, though, is that it’s accessible for everyone. Anybody (older adults, young kids, the whole family) can get there safely without a difficult hike. Plus, you still get that epic small humans in a big landscape feeling!

This drone shot I captured of everyone gathered for Christyn and Lloyd’s ceremony is one of my absolute favorite images from this day because you can see the entire Pacific Coast spreading out behind everyone. Just a small group of people sitting together surrounded by this massive landscape.

How Two Artists Created Their Sandstone Point Wedding Experience

Christyn and Lloyd are both very creative. Christyn is a wedding photographer, and Lloyd is a painter and art teacher. Because of their backgrounds, they approached their wedding a little differently. They weren’t just there for the photos – they wanted to lift each other up creatively as well. Of course, as their photographer, this was a lot of fun for me also.

Some of the ways they brought art into their wedding were through their wedding invitations and vows. For their invitations, Lloyd drew a photo of Natural Bridges. This is a nearby area on the Oregon Coast, and he had asked me for one of my photos and created the invitation artwork from it.

For their vows, he hand wrote them in calligraphy, which made them a work of art and even more intentional.

They exchanged a few gifts that held some personal meaning, and Christyn brought two dresses for the day. The first wedding dress was for the ceremony with family and the second was a vintage wedding dress for their private vows.

The ceremony itself was quick. They wanted family to witness this moment and to be part of the experience, but wanted to keep their private vows for just the two of them. This way they could be alone and experience the full emotions.

From Sandstone Point Cliffs to Secret Beach Portraits

After their ceremony and family portraits at Sandstone Point, Christyn changed into her second dress, and we headed to Secret Beach for their private vow exchange.

This is another thing I love about the Oregon Coast. You can have your ceremony with everyone you love on an accessible clifftop, then adventure to more remote locations for intimate portraits.

We hiked down to the beach for their private vows and portraits and this is where we all started to play a little more. The wind caught Christyn’s vintage dress, the waves crashed against the rocks, and it was just the two of them and the Pacific. As the sun dropped below the horizon, we got creative with some editorial blue hour photos.

Blue hour photography for me used to be mostly lantern photos. But with Christyn and Lloyd, we did more flash photography during blue hour. I played around with the shutter speed and we experimented together. The result was some amazing photos, yes, but it was also photos that truly captured the couple’s connection and personality because they leaned in and embraced the experience with me.

After blue hour, we headed back to Myrview Estates where their families had prepared dinner. They ended the evening surrounded by candlelight shining across the faces of the people who had traveled across the country to celebrate with them.

What Made This Sandstone Point Wedding Special

There were a lot of things I loved about Christyn and Lloyd’s Sandstone Point Oregon wedding.

Lloyd’s hand-lettered calligraphy vows and the artwork he created from my photographs.

The drone shot of everyone gathered for the ceremony.

Christyn’s vintage second dress and how she transformed her look between the ceremony and private vows.

The way they honored each other’s creativity throughout their day.

And the fact that they’d planned for the Oregon Coast, pivoted to North Carolina, then came back to the rugged cliffs when a hurricane changed everything. They could have given up or settled when life threw them curveballs. Instead, they made it work. Everyone they wanted there showed up. And we created something beautiful on the cliffs they’d dreamed about from the beginning.

  • Henry asked all the important questions to make sure he captured what we had envisioned for our wedding day.

Where do I start?! Henry was the perfect choice for our micro wedding on the southern Oregon coast. My wife is a wedding photographer so, choosing ours was of utmost importance. From the first Zoom meeting, I was confident that we made the right decision. Henry asked all the important questions to make sure he captured what we had envisioned for our wedding day. When we briefly considered moving our wedding to the East coast he was accommodating and talked us through logistics. He checked in with us in the months leading up to the big day and ironed out all the final details. Then on the night before the wedding, he came over to our Air Bnb and talked and laughed with us for hours and even shared some photography tips and tricks with my wife.

On the day of the wedding Henry brought the ENERGY! During family photos he kept everyone engaged and entertained as he went down the list of family members/groups that we had provided. When it was time for our private vows, he expertly navigated the way to one of his “secret spots” and captured the most intimate part of our day.

Within 3 days of being home we received the first round of sneak peeks and were absolutely stunned by the images. If you’ve seen Henry’s work, you don’t need much convincing on this point, but seeing yourself captured by the artist is a whole other experience.

If you’re on the fence about booking Henry for your wedding, just remember…the cake will get eaten, the dress/suit will be put in the closet, the flowers will eventually wilt and dry, but these photos are evergreen and they will be the only way to truly transport yourself back to that special moment in your lives. You want to make sure that moment is captured beautifully and that’s what Henry does best
