Christina & James
Christina and James knew they wanted Hawaii for their elopement. They’d stayed at an Airbnb near Hanalei Bay before and experienced one of those “only in Hawaii” type sunsets. The kind of sunset you can’t ever plan for.
That sunset stayed with them for months afterward and ended up becoming the inspiration for their entire wedding day.
When they reached out, they knew they wanted to elope in Kauai for sure, but weren’t quite sure where, how, or when.
As we planned together, their vision grew. What started as a single-day elopement became a two-day luxury experience. Day one for the wedding itself, with a sunrise ceremony at Tunnels Beach and traditional Korean hanbok portraits at sunset. And day two for the honeymoon vibe – exploring the island, Waimea Canyon, and Polihale Beach at sunset.
Over these two days, they got two completely different experiences, and one fully intentional elopement.

How They Planned a Luxury Elopement in Kauai
Christina and James booked two accommodations for their Kauai luxury elopement – an Airbnb and the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay – overlapping their stays to access different parts of the island.
The Airbnb gave them a private cliff and secluded beach, while the 1 Hotel gave them luxury, incredible architecture, and beautiful views without needing to hike anywhere. With multiple options, they got completely different experiences for their two-day celebration.
I also helped them navigate Kauai’s permit system (anywhere you photograph in Kauai requires different permits depending on location). We worked through which locations made sense, what permits we’d need, and how to structure their timeline so they could experience their elopement instead of rushing between spots.
Day One: Tunnels Beach Elopement Ceremony and Korean Hanbok Portraits
On the first morning of their two-day elopement, we started before dawn at Tunnels Beach for their first look and ceremony. The North Shore of Kauai at sunrise is usually very quiet and peaceful, with no other visitors around, which is exactly what Christina and James wanted.
During their ceremony, the officiant performed a traditional Hawaiian ritual of cracking open a coconut, using the coconut water for them to drink and wash each other’s hands. (Later, I used that cracked coconut shell for Christina’s earring detail photos – a small connection between their ceremony and the final images that I loved!)
After their ceremony, we headed to the private beach accessible only through their Airbnb. We hadn’t been expecting much from this location. We’d mainly chosen it for the privacy it offered. But when we arrived, the light in the forest area was insane. Rays of sunlight kept appearing and disappearing through the mist from the waves, and it felt like we’d walked onto a Jurassic Park set!
Christina and James saw it happening in real life, too, which made the moment even better. We were all experiencing this unexpected gift together. I photographed them in those rays from different angles – farther back to show the full landscape around them, then closer to capture their faces as they took it all in.
Sunset Portraits at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay
After spending the morning on the North Shore, we headed back to the 1 Hotel for sunset portraits.
For sunset, we started back at their hotel. This was my first time visiting the 1 Hotel, and it was stunning! The design has all this modern architecture and clean lines, but my favorite part was how you got these incredible views of Hanalei Bay without having to hike to get there.
The couple changed into their traditional Korean hanbok outfits, and we explored the hotel grounds while getting photos of them in their traditional outfits against the hotel’s contemporary design.
What I loved about this experience at the 1 Hotel was how it opened up what a Kauai elopement could be. Before this wedding, my Kauai experience was all about getting to remote outdoor locations, hiking to beautiful spots, and taking photos of couples in nature. But photographing Christina and James’ luxury elopement at this hotel showed me a different flair of what an elopement in Kauai can look like.
Before we ended day one, we headed back to the Airbnb’s private cliff for golden hour overlooking Hanalei Bay. Christina and James were really looking forward to this sunset, as it was a similar moment that inspired this elopement. While we didn’t get the full dramatic sunset they’d hoped for (those are never guaranteed in Hawaii), after the sun dropped below the horizon, the sky lit up with some of the beautiful colors they’d been dreaming about since that first Kauai trip.
Day Two: Exploring Kauai Like Honeymooners
On day two of their elopement, we went into adventure mode. Christina and James wore casual outfits, and we explored beyond the North Shore, starting at Waimea Canyon with its dramatic views and ending the day at Polihale Beach for a sunset picnic.
This day was more like post-elopement/honeymoon vibes, which was really different from most of the two-day elopements I photograph where the couple is in their wedding attires for both days. On this second day, it was just them experiencing Kauai while I documented their adventure.
What made their entire two-day celebration special was how present they were. By a couple hours into day one, they’d completely let go of worrying about how they looked or the angles. From that point on – through the rest of day one and all of day two – they were just two people in love soaking it all in.
I’ve photographed all kinds of elopements, and it doesn’t matter if I photograph someone for four hours or ten hours or two days…it goes by just like that. It will end before you know it, which is why being present matters so much.
