Pierna & Jacob

I’d be lying if I said that we planned for this Northern Lights elopement. Pierna and Jacob chose to elope on 10/10/2024 because it was the only date I had left for the season. None of us knew about the G4 geomagnetic storm* and how it’d give us such a magical light show. But that’s the thing about elopements and about life in general. Some moments aren’t meant to be planned; they’re just meant to be felt.

*A geomagnetic storm is a temporary disturbance of the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by a solar wind shock wave.

The Couple and Their Decision to Plan a Northern Lights Elopement in the Washington Mountains

Pierna and Jacob’s original elopement vision didn’t include the Northern Lights. In fact, all they wanted were some magical vibes with a Twilight-inspired feel.

While researching some location options, they came across this multi-day wedding at Lake Louise on our website and fell in love with the magic and fantasy of it all!

I (Henry) hopped on the phone with them and we started dreaming up their day, not fully knowing just how magical it would be.

Pierna & Jacob’s Unforgettable Northern Lights Elopement

In the days leading up to their Northern Lights elopement, the forecast predicted that it would be a cloudy and rainy day. The day before, I learned that there would be a geomagnetic storm and that there was a high chance that we might be able to see the Northern Lights as low as Washington State!

I didn’t want to bring up the possibility of the Northern Lights to Pierna and Jacob because I didn’t want to get their hopes up. So, we went into the day focused on their plans and our original timeline.

From Dreamy Blue Hour to an Unforgettable Northern Lights Elopement

During blue hour, I noticed the sky had some color. I had seen the Northern Lights for the first time earlier in the year, and also saw an increased number of hikers on the trail, which made me feel even more excited that we might get the chance to see them.

And so, I shared with the couple that I thought we were going to get to witness the dancing lights in the sky.

Right then and there, they decided to change their reception a bit. They had been really excited about eating tacos and playing board games with their friends back at their Airbnb, Mt Hygge Hus. But when they saw the sky and how I described to them that we might be able to see the Northern Lights, they decided to change plans and stay up on the mountain a little bit longer.

With the limited cell service we had, we texted their loved ones back at the cabin and told them we were going to be back late and for them not to wait for us.

The longer we stayed up on the mountain, the more vivid and colorful the sky became. Soft greens turned to vibrant purples, dancing across the sky like something out of a movie. Because it was getting dark, that meant it was also getting colder, but Pierna and Jacob just embraced the whole experience and never complained.

Eventually, we made our way back to the Airbnb, where they shared their first dance in the living room, played board games with their friends, and ended the night exactly how they had originally planned.

Henry’s Elopement Tip

I wholeheartedly believe that life is full of magical moments and sometimes you simply can’t and shouldn’t plan for every single path in life.

In fact, the magic of elopements and photography lies in the unknowns, the unexpected. The weather, the light, the unplanned moments – it’s all part of your story.

If you’re planning an adventure elopement, leave room for spontaneity. You just never know what might happen.

“He is not only one of the kindest people you’ll meet but he will prioritize you and your elopement to the fullest.”

I consider myself VERY LUCKY to have found Henry on Instagram. He is not only one of the kindest people you’ll meet but he will prioritize you and your elopement to the fullest. Henry is the greatest photographer in the worldddd. I tell anyone getting married that if there is one thing to splurge on, let it be photography and let it be Henry. I wanted photos to feel like a work of art and they absolutely do. Henry made it such a fun time and the locations were straight out of a movie.

My husband and I decided to elope and make it twilight-inspired so we looked at many places in Canada and the US that captured that feeling. Henry’s website has incredible resources and the locations in Washington were absolutely a dream and him being based in Washington is what lead us deciding on the North Cascades National Park.

Traveling from Florida, I worried about what to bring, how to plan, and traveling with wedding dress on an airplane. Henry is prepared to answer any question and provide any details you would forget. By the time our elopement was nearby, I was not stressed at all but just excited because no matter what I knew we could pivot if needed and Henry would be able to have a back up solutions ready and help in any way he could. I love that he reassures that any kind of weather would photograph beautifully. Rain, fog, wind, or sun.

We invited 7 of our bestest friends to celebrate with us and they still tell us how funny and kind Henry was. We have the best memories of our elopement. Henry made sure we were prepared and because of that it was the most beautiful day ever.
