Kiely & Mattieu

Something about getting older makes me really cherish the time I have left with the people in my life.

Every gathering we have, no matter how big or small, I look at all the faces in the room and remind myself that no matter how busy life is (and it always is), we’ve all made a decision to be here together and to share the magic of living this life by being in each other’s company.

That’s the power of community, and that is what Kiely and Matthieu got to experience during their two-day Mount Baker elopement.

On the first day, I didn’t take wedding portraits of the couple like I normally do. Instead, I captured honest moments of how the day unfolded…the first looks with loved ones…the laughters….the happy tears.

On the second day, we ventured into the wild – just the three of us. No schedule and no wondering whether guests were waiting for us. Only stillness, intention, and the reason they flew all the way to Washington State – to experience the beauty of the North Cascades in person.

I truly believe that, at the core, a two-day wedding isn’t about adding more.
It’s about creating space to breathe, be present, and to let the moments unfold without rush or expectation. Because that is when the magic happens.

The Couple and Their Decision to Plan a Two-Day Mount Baker Elopement

For the longest time, my couples (and honestly, myself too) struggled to create a timeline that allowed them to be fully present, not only with each other but also with the loved ones they brought along.

Sometimes, with elopements, couples have to sacrifice time with their guests to chase those quiet, mountain-top moments with each other.

But Kiely and Matthieu didn’t want to choose between adventure photos or time with loved ones. So we made a plan that allowed for both.

They chose a two-day Mt Baker wedding experience. One day for connection, laughter, and community.
And another for adventure, intimacy, and reflection.

They were deeply inspired by landscapes that encompass mountains, greenery, and some water.

And, they also wanted their wedding to really be about creating a unique shared experience. One that felt organic to them and allowed them to create memories with their families.

They wanted a location where the natural beauty of the environment set the ambiance and tone for their celebration.

And there is no better place to have all of those things together than Mount Baker.

Not only does Mount Baker have some of the best mountain views in Washington, but many of the surrounding locations are family friendly as well.

Day One: Quality Time, a Mount Baker Elopement Ceremony, and an Intimate Cabin Wedding Reception

On day one of Kiely and Matthieu’s Mt Baker elopement, I met the couple at their cabin for getting ready photos.

Usually, couples will spend a little time writing their vows during this portion of the day, but Kiely and Matthieu wanted to do a different sort of writing. Instead of writing vows, they wrote letters to each other. Then, they put them in their wedding box and closed the lid, saving the letters to read on their one-year anniversary.

This was such a beautiful and unique elopement idea, but, as it turns out, it was also so much more than any of us could have imagined.

Something Kiely mentioned to me after the letter writing was that she didn’t know how much she needed this moment. Up until then, she had been feeling a little anxious. But after spending quality time alone with Matthieu, she felt more relaxed.

Quality time can mean a lot of different things to different people. But no matter what it means to you, finding ways to spend intentional time together at the start of your day can help you feel more present and connected to each other.

Their Mountain Elopement Ceremony at Heather Meadows

After detail photos, we packed up the cars and headed to the forest for some couple and family portraits.

From there, we headed to Artist Point, one of the best locations for an elopement ceremony near Mt Baker. Not only does it have stunning views, but it’s also really accessible, making it an easy location for ceremonies with guests.

The weather that day was really foggy, and when we got to their ceremony location, we couldn’t see a single thing. So we changed plans and headed to nearby Heather Meadows instead.

After their ceremony and family portraits, we went back to their A-frame cabin where a private chef had set up a full meal for them to enjoy on their deck overlooking the forest.

Everyone spend the rest of the evening at the cabin telling stories, dancing, and connecting with each other.

Day Two: Mount Baker Elopement Photos with a Surprise View

For day two of their Mount Baker wedding, the weather forecast showed that it was going to be cloudy again. Not knowing if we would be able to see anything on our hike, I asked the couple if they still wanted to go with the original plan. They said yes.

By the time we hiked all the way up to the top of the trail, we were above the clouds. We got to witness a cloud inversion, which is where the clouds drop lower in the atmosphere and you see mountains and sky above them.

It was such a unique and beautiful experience and something we could never have planned for, but were so thankful to witness.

Later that evening (on our way back down the trail), we stopped for star photos before the clouds fully rolled in and covered the sky.
