Steffi and Evan | Rattlesnake Lake Anniversary Session

ByHenry Tieu October 20, 2017May 29, 2024

Who said that only engaged people get to have fun and adventurous couple photos? Married couples should have yearly photos done too (maybe I’m biased because I am a photographer haha). Steffi and Evan are the two of the most beautiful souls I’ve met and I think they should be models, like not just for me…

@henrysdiary

This was my first time ever to Lake Como and I was This was my first time ever to Lake Como and I was so incredibly lucky to have earned Caitlin and Peyton’s trust for their 2-day elopement experience.

None of us had been here before and Como happened simply because C & P were brave enough to dream

Brave enough to trust in a photographer who hadn’t photographed here before.

Brave enough to believe in themselves and travel to a brand new place for one of the most important days of their lives.

Brave enough to let go of expectations, of what others might think or say—and just follow their hearts toward the wedding experience their souls craved.

The more I photograph weddings and elopements, the more I realize: it’s my clients’ bravery that allows us, as artists, to create work that’s honest and meaningful…
…the kind of art that echoes through time, not just instagram banger images
…the kind of art that will forever become someone’s family heirloom
…the kind of art that freezes not only moments in time but also the feelings of being so alive, so nervous, so excited, so ready for the next chapter, so in love
…the kind of art that whispers and screams “we were here”, “we mattered”, “we loved”, and “we lived fully”

Photos are sacred because they hold a piece of our soul - a connection to who we were in a fleeting moment and being invited to this space is a privilege - thank you for allowing me to be there

Here are photos from Day 1 of our 2-day adventure in Lake Como—where C & P exchanged vows at the very spot where Anakin and Padmé had their wedding in Star Wars

More to come soon for their day 2

C & P, you both are beautiful inside and out. Thank you for trusting in me and congratulations :)

I wrote a caption and then I remember this email f I wrote a caption and then I remember this email from my clients 🥹:

“My dad has been raving about your work to my whole family. He was all like “I was skeptical when Hansen hyped Henry up so much, and I thought to myself ‘How could this one guy be that amazing without any assistants or even any lights?’” My mom told me that he’s now your biggest fan”

Thank you Rachel and Hansen for allowing me to be a part of your magical, beautiful, heartwarming and intentional elopement. I miss you both already

This thought has been heavy on my heart the past c This thought has been heavy on my heart the past couple of months. I once saw someone post“How are photographers like yourself still posting photos like business as usual with everything going on in the world right now?”

And someone responded “Because I still need to feed my family. I don’t have another choice.”

That response hit me hard.

It brought me back to the years I worked full-time as a Cardiac ICU nurse and full-time as a photographer - just trying to chase a dream without sacrificing food on the table.

It brought me back to the sleepless nights after I finally left nursing—a stable career that guaranteed a roof over our heads—to pursue art. I remember wondering:
“Was this the right choice?”
“What if people get sick of my work?”
“What if I fail my couples, my husband, my family?”

And yet—8 years and 250+ five-star reviews later—although the journey wasn’t easy (and still isn’t), I’m proud but most importantly grateful.

Grateful for the trust my couples give me.
Grateful for the art I get to create.
Grateful that photography can support my family and gave us our twin babies

If you’re out here navigating your own fears, balancing dreams with real-life responsibilities—I see you.

Becoming a photographer who creates art that moves people and builds a business that provides real financial freedom doesn’t have to be a far-off dream. It’s a reality.

It’s a reality for me, and I know it can be a reality for you—if you TRULY believe in the POWER OF ART and the IMPORTANCE OF SERVING COUPLES on their wedding day.

That’s why I’m so excited to share:

Maddie Mae of @adventureinstead and I are teaching a FREE WORKSHOP: “How to Stop Attracting Price-Shoppers & Break into the High-End Market.”

We’ll walk you through actionable steps to create stand-out work and craft a premium client experience so you can confidently book couples who trust you as an artist.

What does love look like to you? The light swirl? What does love look like to you?

The light swirl? It’s what I imagine love would look like in physical form — when no one else is around, when the world gets quiet, when two souls collide and explode into warm light.

Under a sky full of stars, surrounded by mountains as old as time itself… R and C made their own kind of magic and allowed to me to be there to capture this beautiful ending of their elopement day

Yes, to some, this is simply a photo.
But to R & C, to me, to us, this was also a quiet promise,
…a deep breath,
…a moment suspended between earth and sky.

So with R and C’s patience, I light paint their love with the beautiful Mt. Shuksan in the back.

Thank you R & C.

More of this, always.

3 Tips for Storytelling Wedding & Elopement Moment 3 Tips for Storytelling Wedding & Elopement Moments with the Sony 28-70mm GM ✨📸

1️⃣ Use Space to Tell the Story – Start wide to capture the scene, then zoom in for intimate details like hands, necks, and organic moments—all without switching lenses.

2️⃣ Capture the In-Between Moments – Don’t drop your camera after a pose! The silent, fast autofocus keeps you ready for raw, unposed emotions.

3️⃣ Embrace Blue Hour – Keep that F/2 aperture open and shoot into the night without losing quality.

This lens hasn’t left my camera body since I got it and it is definitely a game changer for wedding photographers

🏆 AHHH!!! I WON THE 2025 BEST OF THE BEST ENGAG 🏆 AHHH!!! I WON THE 2025 BEST OF THE BEST ENGAGEMENT PHOTO by @junebugweddings 🥹

When my husband told me I got an email from Junebug, we were in the middle of feeding our babies. My hands started shaking. My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest.

This past year has been a whirlwind—traveling the world, documenting love stories, and raising a family. Every moment has been a gift, but it’s also come with sleepless nights and long, exhausting days.

When life moves this fast, it’s easy to lose sight of why we first picked up the camera.

So when I submitted 15 photos out of the thousands I captured this year, it wasn’t just about entering a competition. It was about reflection— seeing my art, acknowledging my growth, and reliving the incredible moments I shared with my couples.

This winning image was taken in Fiji, where I spent three unforgettable days documenting J and K’s love story. It was a moment of celebration, of breaking free, of going all in despite fear.

This award means everything to my heart and is more than a simple recognition — it’s a reminder of what I hold so strongly in my heart both in life and in photography because for me, the thing about photos is that no matter how crazy life can get, for a second, when we click that shutter button, time stands still,  everything freezes, and in that moment, for a fraction of a second, everything is beautiful and life is imperfect perfect.

J and K, thank you for trusting me to tell your story.
To the Junebug team and judges @sararogersphotography @thientongphotography @dylanmhowell — thank you for seeing our hearts.

To my 2025 couples, I can’t wait to create more magic with you. ✨
