We met under the tropical sun in Cancun but our st We met under the tropical sun in Cancun but our stories started long before. These two brides in love, just like how my husband and myself once were, searching for a version of that freedom that wasn’t handed to us, but one we had to carve out ourselves. This elopement was intimate but wasn’t lacking in impact. It was quiet but it echoed. We shared coming out stories and how all of our stories wasn’t just about one single moment. It was a thousand tiny choices to choose love over fear, truth over silence, and peace over acceptance. As they jumped into the ocean and the water washed away all the pain, as they sat in front of the boat sharing their vows over sunset, I saw the strength in their love: sometimes, we have to lose people to find family; sometimes, we have to walk away from what we thought we needed, so we can step into what we’ve always deserved. Pride month this year feels different because it is different. The world is unrest Life just seems harder in every direction Corporations, in fear, have quietly stepped back and are no longer wrapping their logos in rainbows. Gender-affirming care for trans youth is under legislative attack in multiple states, stripping away essential healthcare, safety, and dignity.
 Queer books are being banned.
 Rights we thought were settled are now questioned again. And still, we show up.
 We exist.
 We love loudly, even in silence just like A and S, just like my husband and myself, just like many other queer people out there. To A & S: Thank you for letting me witness your love story, for sharing your courage with me, and for reminding me that Pride isn’t loud for everyone. Sometimes, Pride looks like safety. Like softness. Like choosing yourself again and again. Happy Pride! Not just this month, but every day we wake up and choose to live in our truth. No matter who you are, you always have a home here with me! 🌈
Happy Birthday Alpine and Glacier It’s only bee Happy Birthday Alpine and Glacier It’s only been a year yet we’ve loved a thousand versions of you already: …the version of when you were just an idea, a once upon a dream, a wish we carried in our hearts …the milk-drunk snuggles, the midnight wake-ups, the early morning cuddles …the moment you learned stranger danger and immediately reached for us….because now, you know we’re your parents, your safety, your home. And nothing compares to that feeling. Movies aren’t as good as the way you fall asleep Songs don’t sound as good as the little babbles you make while dreaming Being your dads has taught us how to care in ways we never knew before: …how to hold someone when they are crying …how to soothe them when they don’t even know how to ask for help …how to love someone because of and not despite of their vulnerabilities Thank you for being exactly who you are. Thank you for letting us be your dads. Though all of life’s temporaries and impermanence might come and go, the world will change, time will pass, we’ll forever be your constant. Journey entry from June 2024: Fatherhood It’s Journey entry from June 2024: Fatherhood It’s only been four days since we got to hold you both…fully…wholly…immersively And yet, somehow, it feels like we were never strangers at all. Four days and I can already see how much you’ve grown. You are growing into your tiny hands, them tiny feet, your big yawns, and those marvelous cries whenever you are hungry, uncomfortable, or trying to discover your voice. You had your heel prick appointment this week. Daddy Viet took Alpine in and all could hear was your cry. I wasn’t in the room.I couldn’t see you but I know distinctively that it is your cry. It hurt to hear you and not be able to hold or comfort you. Then it was my turn. I took Glacier in. You slept soundly in my arms…until it happened…and you let out the loudest cry of pain. It was that continuous cry while I was holding you that made my stomach drop It hurt even more seeing your frown brows and curled lips all soaked with your tears and not being able to do anything to help. It almost felt like a betrayal of trust…like you were asking “hey dad, I thought I was safe here when I’m with you…why am I in pain?” At first, I felt like I failed you. But then I realized that this is what fatherhood is… …it’s dad and I being there with you …going through life with you, even during the most painful times…not to fix everything for you but to hold you through it …today …tomorrow …from your very first breath until our very last …whenever you need us most” ——— And now I finally understand: Fatherhood is not just about protecting, guiding, or nurturing. It’s also about showing up. To be there just so you know you’re not alone. Not today, not ever Happy Father’s Day to my best friend. I thought I had loved every version of you. ✨Their Love Story is now featured on The New Yor ✨Their Love Story is now featured on The New York Times✨ I had the privilege of documenting K and B for 3 unforgettable days at Camp Mendocino and I walked away with not just a new friendship but also the profound joy of witnessing something I’ve never quite felt before. You see….when you’re gay, sometimes you have to make hard choices and unfathomable amount of sacrifices in order to protect your peace and be with The 1 you know you can’t live without. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll have a friend or two who will stand by you. For K and B, they had an army. The phrase “chosen family” is known All Too Well for queer people like us. Not all of us get to have our parents walk us down the aisle or share a first dance with. Love in this chosen family shows up in a quieter ways …in the art of showing up …in the fact that sometimes you don’t need much, just a hug to a friend, a co-worker, an aunt …in simple gestures that tells us that there’s nothing wrong with us and that we are deeply loved. To think that just a year ago, I stood at a wedding where gay slurs were tossed around…and now, here I am, surrounded by all kind of love: gays with kids, lesbians slow dancing, older couples breaking it down on the dance floor, younger ones embracing each other in warm hugs, etc… I was Enchanted I know that I am “just a vendor”, and maybe my feelings don’t always matter on someone else’s wedding day but when it’s all said and done, K & B and all my couples aren’t just statistics in my yearly booking numbers, they become the permanent pages in the book that is my life and forever shape the way I am as a human, a husband, a dad, a friend, a photographer. You, my couples, are my Wildest Dreams. K & B, thank you for coloring this page in my book of life with the warmest colors in the rainbow.
