Amanda & Alex

When Amanda and Alex first reached out to me about their Switzerland elopement, I knew it was going to be something special. From telling me their story and hearing of their adventurous hearts to the way they looked at their wedding day – not as a performance, but as an awe-filled experience in the mountains – it was clear this day was going to be filled with magic.

The Couple and Their Decision to Plan an Elopement in Switzerland

Amanda and Alex met studying abroad in Australia, but it was a trip to New Zealand that truly changed everything. During their travels they went on incredible adventures and experienced that  “on top of the world” feeling for the first time. A feeling that they told me they hoped to recreate on their wedding day.

While New Zealand held a special place in their hearts, Amanda and Alex chose to elope in Switzerland. They loved Europe, and the Alps reminded them of New Zealand’s dramatic landscapes. For them, it just felt like the perfect place to experience the on top of the mountain feeling that they wanted.

They were set on planning a Switzerland elopement from the beginning, but even more than the location, what Amanda and Alex truly wanted was to be present together and have some cool adventures along the way.

From Foggy Mornings To Alpine Views, This Is How Amanda & Alex Planned Their Swiss Alps Elopement

One of the most important parts of every elopement is the elopement timeline. We work with all our couples to create a customized plan for their day. No two elopements ever look the same, but when it came to Amanda and Alex’s day, their timeline required some very intentional planning.

We focused everything around their sunset photos first. Since their mountain location required a gondola ride – and in Switzerland, those often stop running way before sunset –  we had two options: either hike down in the dark, or stay up top overnight.

So we designed their elopement day to start with sunrise photos by the lake at our hotel. The morning was so foggy and cloudy, which was magical for their lake photos, but we also didn’t know what the rest of the day was going to bring.

Later that afternoon, we checked out of the first hotel, rode the gondola up the mountain, and checked into the mountain hut.

Once we got to the hut, we took some creative editorial photos in their room. The room was quite small and there was only one window, but that was enough because we had such a stunning view outside, which I incorporated into their photos.

Sunset Adventure in the Mountains

When it was time for sunset, we made our way to the trail to start the hike. Amanda was a little nervous that we might not have a view, as the past few days had been quite cloudy. By the time we started hiking, though, the sun showed up for us and never left.

There were so many moments I loved from Amanda and Alex’s elopement day in the Swiss Alps:

…The foggy sunrise that kept all of us on our toes about what was to come.

…The moment they saw each other’s wedding attire for the first time.

…The way we made art in just a tiny little room in a mountain hut.

…The hike where Amanda scrambled up the mountain like a mountain goat (in her gorgeous dress, no less), while Alex and I held on to the cables for dear life.

But what I will forever hold close to my heart was the moment when we got to the top of the mountain at sunset. After Amanda and Alex climbed to their spot, they ran back down from that cliff to where I stood and gave me a hug that I could feel with all my being.

I knew then and there that they had felt that on top of the world feeling that had been dreaming of. The kind where nature makes you feel so small, and your adrenaline is buzzing with beauty and joy.

Henry’s Elopement Tip

Planning an elopement day with so many moving pieces can feel overwhelming. This is where working with an experienced elopement photographer can help.

With all the moving parts of Amanda and Alex’s Switzerland elopement, I wanted to make sure we didn’t run behind or miss the gondola, as that would have started a domino effect that would affect the rest of the day and cause us to miss important moments.

In the end, careful planning pays off, but if you don’t want to tackle it alone, reach out. We would love to help you plan your Swiss Alps elopement (or an elopement anywhere else in the world!).
