Erin & Robin
Erin and Robin got to spend three days exploring beautiful Norway during their elopement on Senja Island. While we also experienced some unexpected weather, we got to witness the magic of these beautiful islands. Keep scrolling to read about Erin and Robin’s Senja elopement and learn our top tips when eloping in the mountains.
The Couple and Their Decision to Plan a Senja Norway Elopement
For many of our couples, the decision of where to elope holds a lot of meaning. Erin and Robin chose to plan their elopement on Senja Island because the mountains were where they had first met as teenagers.
Having road-tripped through Europe and visited places like Scotland and Austria, the couple fell in love with the beautiful mountains and landscapes throughout Europe. They had visited the Senja Islands before and it was the place they wanted to return for their elopement.
This time, they were also hoping to see the Northern Lights. So, we started planning their Senja Norway elopement for Halloween. Even though Norway experiences more wind and snow during this time of year, it gave Erin and Robin the best chance to see the dancing lights (and luckily, they did).
Erin and Robin’s Multi-Day Senja Elopement
Erin and Robin’s elopement on Senja Island was truly about embracing the unexpected. We had originally planned on a two-day experience but had to change plans at the last minute due to the weather.
Day One: Pre-Wedding Photos
On the first day of Erin and Robin’s Senja elopement, I (Henry) met up with the couple to explore the island and document some pre-wedding photos in casual attire to help them feel comfortable in front of the camera. Since the couple is from Europe, they brought their dog with them and the four of us went exploring.
That night, we got a weather alert that a snowstorm was coming the next day (their main elopement day). Although this was not the news that any of us wanted, we had to come to terms with the reality that their dream location was not feasible and safe. So, we made the hard decision to change plans at the last minute and come up with a new location and elopement timeline.
The good thing about eloping in Norway is that this region has beautiful places everywhere! There are so many locations that allow you to drive up and park and see a beautiful view right in front of you.
Day Two: Adventure Elopement with Steamy Bathtub Photos
The next morning Erin and Robin got ready at their hotel before the three of us headed out to a nearby location for some elopement photos.
We had originally planned for this to be their main wedding day, but because of the weather and the short amount of daylight Norway experiences during this time of year, we decided to save their private vows for the next morning.
After adventuring around some areas near their hotel, we ended the day with some blue-hour lantern photos and a steamy bathtub session in the couple’s hotel room.
Day Three: A Snowy Private Vow Exchange
The next morning, we met back up at Erin and Robin’s hotel as I wanted to make sure the couple got some portraits at another beautiful location.
We found a beautiful snowy overlook where Erin and Robin exchanged their vows during sunrise with their fur baby as their witness.
Henry’s Elopement Tip: Pay Attention to Weather Patterns at Your Elopement Location
Every elopement location is going to have its unique weather patterns. Not all locations have the typical four seasons and, if they do, they don’t always line up at the time of year you might expect.
Mountain elopement locations like Norway, Patagonia, or even the Dolomites have different weather than the rest of the surrounding areas. Because the snow in these areas melts more slowly, there are usually only a few months of good weather.
*Pro Tip – For Norway, the best time to visit is usually June – September.
When choosing where to elope, here are a few of our top tips:
- Research the best time of year for the location you choose
- Be aware that mountain landscapes have a shorter time window to visit and that these areas can get quite busy during peak season.
- Consider eloping during shoulder season (one or two months before or after peak season) to avoid crowds. This will allow you more privacy; just be aware that the weather may be unpredictable.
- Plan to include a few extra days and arrive early to allow room for last-minute changes.
The beauty of eloping in places like Norway is the incredible scenery. While elopements don’t always go according to plan, it’s in these unexpected moments, the ones when you look at your partner and realize that nothing else matters, that make for a truly memorable experience.
