The Couple and Their Decision to Plan an Iceland Helicopter Elopement

Chelsea and David’s Iceland helicopter elopement included not just one, but five incredible locations!

When I (Henry) first connected with the couple, I shared with them photos from a previous Iceland elopement I had photographed. During that trip, I not only photographed a beautiful elopement, but I also spent a couple of days celebrating my own anniversary and finding some new amazing hidden landscapes that I could take future couples.

So, when we hopped on our first phone call and Chelsea and David expressed how much they loved the landscapes of Iceland, I was super excited to share with them the locations I had explored. They were set on planning an Iceland elopement from day one – the only thing we didn’t know for sure was whether fitting everything into one day was possible.

So, in order to accommodate everything the couple had in mind, we decided to plan a helicopter elopement in Iceland.

From First Look Photos at the Hotel To 5 Epic Adventure Locations, This Is How Chelsea and David Celebrated Their Helicopter Elopement in Iceland

Although this wasn’t my first time photographing a helicopter elopement, this was my first time flying all over Iceland in a helicopter. Because we had so many locations we wanted to explore, Chelsea and David booked a 5-hour customized tour so we could witness the magic of Iceland from both land and sky.

On the morning of their Iceland helicopter elopement, I met the couple at their hotel, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon. While the couple was getting ready, I documented their detail photos while they sipped champagne and soaked in the first few moments of their wedding day. I have to admit I got SO inspired by the modern concrete design of their hotel and Chelsea’s elopement dress!

Knowing we had the helicopter for 5 hours, I wanted to make sure we maximized our time for photos. So, we planned to utilize the helicopter adventure for locations that were further away or harder to get to and save the drivable locations for later in the day.

I sat down and mapped out 5 unique locations: A geothermal landing, glacier landing, Háifoss waterfalls, Landmannalaugar, and an iconic black sand beach. Chelsea and David truly got to experience ALL the different kinds of landscapes Iceland has to offer!

In addition to all the beautiful places we got to see, my absolute favorite moment from their Iceland helicopter elopement was when we got back from the tour. The day was getting late so we took a break and connected over the infamous Icelandic hot dogs during the most beautiful sunset.

Afterward, we drove to the last location of the day and got to experience another geothermal geyser with the most vibrant sunset.

Planning an Iceland Heli Elopement? This is the Best Time of Year to Go

When planning a helicopter elopement, one of the things we always have to pay attention to is the weather. In order for a helicopter to safely take flight, you need to have clear skies and not a lot of rainfall. If a helicopter elopement in Iceland is on your bucket list, we definitely recommend visiting during the summer months, but winter has some magical things to offer as well. It all just comes down on which type of experience you want to have.

Winter

If you want to experience a winter wonderland elopement in Iceland, then November-March is an ideal time to visit. During these months, Iceland’s ice caves truly come alive with the most stunning blue glacier waters.

The northern lights also take place during this season, but you will want to time your visit properly in order to have the best chance of sighting the lights. September-October and February-March tend to be the best months to witness the aurora borealis and, as someone who just witnessed these lights for the first time, I have to say, this is a bucket list item you will want to experience at least once in your life!

Summer

For the most ideal weather during your Iceland heli elopement, summertime is your best bet! June-September tends to be Iceland’s dryer months, but keep in mind that it can rain anytime.

My personal favorite time to visit Iceland is around June-early July. During this time, the sun doesn’t set meaning more time to explore and go on an adventure! Because the days are longer, this also means that you can experience longer golden hours, which gives the dreamy warm light you see in Chelsea and David’s photos. This is also what allowed us to visit FIVE different locations all in one day.

Keep in mind though, that summertime in Iceland also means more tourists, so while the area might be a bit busier, don’t worry. We’ll help you find all the secluded spots for your elopement in Iceland.

He really took the time to understand what our vision/wishes were for that special day and turned it all into magic.

When my husband and I decided to elope our first idea was where could we have amazing pictures taken with a variety of landscapes. After a short search we found our person on Pinterest. We knew from day one of communication with Henry that he was legit and knowledgeable, as well as passionate about his career. Henry was there for us every step of the way from emails, FaceTime, to in person during our day. He is not only your photographer, but hype bff, looks out for you during the process, guides but doesn’t overstep, takes the lead if needed so you can be in the moment, and truly lives in that moment with you. His work speaks for itself (STUNNING), he spent hours the day prior scouting locations, really took the time to understand what our vision/wishes were for that special day and turned it all into magic. 10/10 recommend, you won’t have another experience like it 🙂
