Why Honduras is the Best Tropical Elopement Destination for Beach Weddings

As Central America’s second-largest country, Honduras is a tropical paradise that is rich in culture, history, and beauty. Filled with beaches, rainforests, jungles, reefs, and ancient ruins, there is so much to see and do in this gorgeous country.

Honduras consists of both mainland and islands (~99 to be exact) and the islands are often referred to as the Bay Islands. For Carley and Liz’s elopement, we traveled off the mainland, to the island of Roatan. Roatan is the largest and most developed island of Honduras and is a great place for diving and deep-sea fishing. Here, you will also find the 2nd largest coral reef in the world (second to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.) Carly and Liz love exploring the ocean together so Roatan, Honduras was the perfect place for their destination elopement, but more on that later.

The Best Time of Year to Plan an Elopement in Honduras

Honduras is a tropical country with average temperatures ranging in the 80s to 90s year-round so there truly is no bad time of year to visit this tropical paradise. As with many tropical countries though, there is a dry season and a rainy season so it all depends on what you want to experience for your elopement day. The most important thing to keep in mind to have the best time with your elopement in Honduras is that no matter what we do, we cannot fully control the weather. If you embrace whatever the day brings, you’ll be able to enjoy the day for what it is and it will reflect on your photos. If it does rain, we can photograph in the rain and we will prepare you for the best experience. You can see more examples of what elopements in the rain are like on our Blog and Instagram.

Honduras’ dry season occurs from December through April. Temperatures during these months are warm and there is less chance of rain. May through November brings the rainy season along with hotter and more humid conditions. Since Roatan is a popular tourist destination, it can be helpful to book your elopement during the shoulder months or off-season to help avoid crowds.

The Couple and Their Decision To Elope In Honduras

Carley and Liz originally reached out to me back in summer 2020 and I first met them for their engagement session in October later that year. The couple knew they wanted to elope in Honduras, but with all the unknowns in the early days of COVID, we were not sure what would be possible in 2021. But we moved ahead with our plans anyway, hoped for the best, and luckily, were not disappointed!

Scuba diving is a big part of Carley and Liz’s relationship. Shortly after they started dating, they found out that they both had a mutual love for the sport so what did they do? They started diving together every weekend! Carley and Liz love exploring the ocean together and they have traveled all over to states like Hawaii and California to pursue this love together so it was no surprise that they would also plan their elopement day around diving as well.

Carley and Liz found a beautiful, all-inclusive, scuba diving resort in Roatan, Honduras where they were able to spend every day of their elopement trip being out in the water.

This is the beautiful thing about elopements; being able to incorporate the things you love into your day. The things that are meaningful to you and your partner and the things that you enjoy doing together. Your elopement day is a unique representation of the two of you and your love for each other.

From Scuba Diving In the Morning Hours To Sailing Into the Ocean During Sunset, This Is How To Plan an Elopement In Honduras Adventurously

Carley and Liz knew they wanted their elopement day to be filled with people they love and activities they enjoyed doing. The morning of their elopement we woke up early so Carley and Liz could go on a dive. They paddle-boarded out into the ocean for their diving session and afterward, we took photos while they relaxed, wrote their vows, and went swimming. That afternoon each of the brides got ready for their emotional first look and ceremony. Their family and friends gathered around them in support while Carley and Liz tearfully exchanged their vows.

That evening, we went back out to the water for sunset photos on a boat and ended the evening with their intimate reception on the beach where they cut the cake and watched fireworks.

Carley and Liz, I am so damn honored that you invited me to be a part of your special day! Watching your love for each other and how you incorporated your love for scuba diving into your elopement day was so inspiring and I can’t wait ‘til we reunite again!

Kind words from the couple:

My wife and I worked with Henry for our engagement and elopement photos- and we could not have picked a better photographer. My wife researched dozens of photographers and found many of them lacked vision and creativity and didn’t have any photos in their portfolio of gay couples. We really wanted a photographer who understood us and listened to what we wanted. Henry met with us right away, via FaceTime because of covid, and we knew from the first meeting that he was the perfect fit. He was warm, kind and had great ideas for our engagement and elopement shots from the first meeting. We had a wonderful engagement shoot where Henry incorporated our ideas and made them even better than we could ever have imagined. We eloped in Honduras, Henry and his husband traveled across the world to make our day incredibly special. Henry took photos the entire day of our wedding, capturing the joy we felt and the special moments we wanted to remember most. Henry was so thoughtful and creative; he went above and beyond to capture our entire wedding experience. We wanted beautiful, high-res photos that we could display and enjoy for the rest of our lives and Henry gave us hundreds of gorgeous photos to choose from. I cannot recommend Henry Tieu Photography enough, he captured memories we will treasure for a lifetime.
