Amalfi Coast Positano Elopement | Italy Destination Wedding Photographer

Positano Boat Ride for wedding photos during sunset

I met Nancy and Tim for the first time ever in Oregon for their adventurous mountain hiking engagement photos. I can go on and on about that session but we should save that for another blog post.

After a day full of dad jokes, life stories, and adventures, it was sad to say goodbye. Nancy and Tim told me they didn't know when they are getting married yet but when they know, they would let me know and of course they did not disappoint.

I woke up from a text message from the couple asking if I would want to join them in Positano, Italy and I did not know for sure if this text was real or if I was still dreaming.

As an artist, I love creating art but nothing is more fulfilling than having your clients love your art enough to bring you across the world to such an epic locations that I could only dream of.

We jumped on a FaceTime call right away to work out the logistic. I still remember that night. I was in my car, had my scrubs on, about to walk into the hospital to work the night shift. Tim and Nancy in their bedroom and I could see the excitements in their eyes when we talked about their small little intimate wedding in Positano, Italy.

Since this would be my first time ever in Europe, I wanted to make a trip out of it. I brought my husband and my friends along so we can explore together before heading to the Amalfi Coast for Positano. When we landed in Rome, I introduced Nancy and Tim to the gang. We instantly connected. It's just one of those events in life where you never know how but friendships just happen so organically and I will forever cherish them all.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast area for Positano is not easy. It seems far enough that there should be a train directly there or a flight there. Being a beachside village in Southern Italy, Positano is wildly beautiful and no wonder why it's such a perfect spot for vacations and destination weddings. However, it also consists of narrowed streets that are quite windy and hard to navigate if you are not an experienced driver from the area.

From Rome, we took the train to Naples. From Naples, we hired a private driver to get all of us to Positano safely. One quick warning for those who are looking to do this trip. Pickpocketing is a huge issue in Europe, especially around crowded area. Before our trip, we learned from multiple sources to be vigilant about everything so we paid extra attention to our surroundings. At the Naples train station, I personally saw dudes walking around staring at us and trying to intimidate us. In other words, just be careful with what you're packing and how you're packing your stuff.

When we arrived to Positano, our mouths were just wide open the whole time. From far away, we could look down the cliff and see the whole town of Positano with all the colorful buildings mixed with the blue water. I rolled down the window and instantly smelled the fresh air from the ocean. The cool wind woke all of us up and I just felt so inspired to create and to photograph.

From planning, we knew that the wedding day will be a bit scheduled out due to transportation arrangements so we did a day-before session for Nancy and Tim. From their Airbnb, we took the stairs down to the beach. Positano is known for all these staircase and it was quite hot in August, us three were just sweating profusely. I carried a towel around my neck. Nancy and Tim carried some tequila :) I wanted to incorporate all the pretty streets of Positano in their wedding photos to truly showcase they did an adventure around these streets so we went around and explored all the secret crevices and corners. We then ended the night with a fun boat ride out to the ocean so we all can look back at the village of Positano and admire the beauty of this place together

On the day of their intimate wedding / elopement, we spent most of the time at La Tagliata Restaurant. There’s nothing like an Italian reception dinner. They kept bringing food out and we kept on eating the night away. Restaurant staff went out and played live music and danced around with us. The couple, their guests, and myself included, were dancing so hard we did not even understand a word but we had fun like no other.

The best memory of the trip has to be the day after their intimate wedding in Positano. We did a boat ride together. The goal was to get to Capri but due to the weather, it was not safe for us to get there, so we changed the plan and just rode around the Amalfi Coast. I remember sitting in the front of the boat, got hella nauseous from being sea sick, but still feeling so damn emotional from all the trust and love the couple gave me. I thanked them over and over but I felt like it was never enough because never in my life I could imagine my side hobby could turn into a business where I am not only making money to feed my family but also get to connect with people who trust my art and support my creativity enough to bring me half way across the globe to Europe. I sat next to the couple on the boat, we all looked into the distance, listened to the wind mixed with Despacito, and took in every single second there.

Positano till this day is still my most favorite location and every time I think of the Amalfi Coast, I think of Nancy and Tim’s intimate wedding / elopement. These guys now are my BFFs. We’ve been driving to each other’s house in Washington to celebrate all the holidays and birthdays together. It’s so damn epic to randomly meet people, photograph their important moments in life, and turned that client-photographer relationship into a whole new level of friendship.

Love you guys :) I can’t wait to document more important moments for you both.
